Cut Flower of the Month: Brassica

Commonly called “Ornamental Cabbage”, these versatile flowers are part of the cabbage family, but they are meant

to be looked at, not eaten!

There are two varieties on the market, “Crane White” and “Crane Ruby”.

They usually become available in the late summer, and remain strong through to Winter.

Some people say they look like Rose blossoms on steroids, with thick heavy stems reaching about 60cm, and  waxy petals arranged in whorls reaching about 10-15 cm wide.

Two or three in a vase accented with strong foliage is quite striking to be sure, or, they also work great as a focal point; clustered together in the heart of an arrangement.

Just a warning, though…be sure to change  the water every couple of days to avoid the heady scent of boiling cabbage!
